There is no common definition of anarchism that is accepted by all schools of anarchism. Some say anarchism is simply “the rejection of the State,” but some say anarchism necessarily aims to abolish all “social hierarchies.” Others, still, claim anarchism is simply a 100 % voluntaryist society, where free individuals voluntarily take on responsibilities and associate with others, while yet others say anarchism must include both dimensions of fairness and equality. In order to make things easier, the Anarchism.net editors are collecting anarchism definitions by all thinkers, writers, and activists throughout the history of anarchism. From Piotr Kropotkin’s famous definition in The Encyclopaedia Britannica to less well-known yet interesting definitions of famous and not-so-famous anarchists. Piotr Kropotkin’s definition of “anarchism.”
